Kalibrierwindkanal

For Westenberg Engineering, September 15, 2025, marks a significant milestone: Together with the Air Force Metrology and Calibration Program (AFMETCAL), we installed the first state-of-the-art wind tunnel system of its kind within the United States Air Force at Otis Air National Guard Base (ANGB). This new capability enables the Air Force to calibrate hundreds of pocket weather meters directly on site—devices that are essential for flight safety and mission readiness.

Pocket weather meters measure wind speed and other atmospheric conditions and are used worldwide to support safe takeoff and landing decisions. Until now, the Air Force had to send these instruments to external calibration laboratories, resulting in high costs and long turnaround times. The new system at Otis ANGB eliminates this dependency and strengthens the Air Force’s ability to maintain its equipment efficiently and cost-effectively.

AFMETCAL identified Otis ANGB as the ideal location for the first installation. The base offers the necessary physical space, an experienced team of technicians, and a strategic position enabling it to handle about half of the nation’s calibration workload. A second system will be installed at Travis Air Force Base in California.

For Westenberg Engineering, the focus throughout the project was on close collaboration with PMEL specialists and AFMETCAL. Together, we carried out technical customizations, developed calibration standards, and conducted initial training to ensure a seamless integration of the wind tunnel system. The expertise of the 102nd Intelligence Wing units—ranging from structural modifications and logistics to technical support—was essential for the successful installation.

As an engineering partner, we are especially grateful for the professional, cooperative collaboration with all U.S. Air Force stakeholders involved. This project demonstrates how specialized engineering expertise and military precision can combine to create unique, forward-looking capabilities. The new system establishes Otis ANGB as a standout location within the Air Force—and we are proud to have contributed to this achievement.
